This 2003 Chevrolet Silverado came in with both daytime running lights inoperative. In order to access the DRL bulbs the headlight assembly has to be removed first. It is pretty simple. Locate the retaining pin and lift up the lever.
With the lever lifted up the pin can be slid out towards the center of the grill.
Now that the pin is removed the headlight assembly can be tilted forward.
Once the assembly is far enough out the wires can be disconnected from the bulbs.
All right now the headlight assembly is out of the way you can access the DRL socket from the rear of the lower light assembly. However it is pretty easy most of the time to just depress the latch at the outer edge of the light assembly.
I am using a screw driver to depress the latch and then the assembly will come out quite easily.
I removed the socket from the lens assembly with the intention of just replacing the bulb but I found that the socket was damaged, burnt out.
I spliced in a new 4184 socket assembly. Installed a new bulb, placed the socket back into the light assembly and reassembled the truck. Another one fixed.
To order this socket please click here.
You have let me realize that I did not put enough information on actually splicing in the new socket. There has been some confusion so I have added another post on that subject.

Was the parking brake engaged? The DRL’s are turned off if the parking brake is engaged.
hello sparky, i have the same issue with the drl’s. i was hooking my plow up and noticed that the bulbs were not lit.i put it in drive with the truck started, i have power at the drl fuse, and i swaped out the relay for another that i knew worked. i probed the wire near the socket and have no power, any ideas? my auto light work perfect. the drl is the only issue. thanks allan
Instead of checking the terminals in the socket, you will need to pierce the insulation of the wire near the socket to check for power. Once you find power there, it will just be a case of changing the burnt out socket assembly.
Hey sparky
Same situation here, 2003 1500 sliverado, passenger side drl works intermittently, checked voltage at wires and getting nothing while driver side is on. Switched bulbs from driver to passenger, both bulbs work in driver side only, appears to be in the wiring that looks like it feeds from the driver side to the passenger side, like I said no voltage at pass. side wires. I have noticed probably 9/10 chevy trucks around the 2003-2007 year range that I see on coming have one light out, so I figured It’s a common problem. Googled it and here I am, thanks in advance.
The DRL relay and fuse are located in the underhood fuse box. The relay is controlled by the BCM under the driver’s side of the dash. If checking the DRL fuse and relay provides no answer I strongly recommend using a scan tool to diagnose. The ambient light sensor is one of the more common failure items. It is located ta the windshield edge of the dash cover in the center. You need a Tech 2 or equivalent scan tool to access the system.
