2003 Chevrolet Silverado, Daytime Running Lights Inop

This 2003 Chevrolet Silverado came in with both daytime running lights inoperative. In order to access the DRL bulbs the headlight assembly has to be removed first. It is pretty simple. Locate the retaining pin and lift up the lever.

With the lever lifted up the pin can be slid out towards the center of the grill.

Now that the pin is removed the headlight assembly can be tilted forward.

Once the assembly is far enough out the wires can be disconnected from the bulbs.

All right now the headlight assembly is out of the way you can access the DRL socket from the rear of the lower light assembly. However it is pretty easy most of the time to just depress the latch at the outer edge of the light assembly.

I am using a screw driver to depress the latch and then the assembly will come out quite easily.

I removed the socket from the lens assembly with the intention of just replacing the bulb but I found that the socket was damaged, burnt out.

I spliced in a new 4184 socket assembly. Installed a new bulb, placed the socket back into the light assembly and reassembled the truck. Another one fixed.

You have let me realize that I did not put enough information on actually splicing in the new socket. There has been some confusion so I have added another post on that subject.

  1. My DRL come on in park ut turn switch for lights on they go off no lights at all, turn back just alittle they come back on,Brand new HL switch so what could it be bulbs are good also so what do you think???Roert T.no lights Thank you
Just DL thats all no dim no bright.

  2. Thanks, Sparky. Yes… in gear, running, parking brake off – means that I need to find a store window to angle-park in front of. But, thanks for the clarification and if I must purchase two harness sets, I will – it is an insurance issue for me; my policy incorporates the understanding that I have functioning DRLs. How difficult the harness replacement to be done in the driveway? Thanks, ed novak

  3. Sorry, I guess I should be a little clearer but a 4184 repair harness is the socket assembly with with wires terminals and heat shrink tubing. Also do not forget the DRL only work while the truck is running and in gear. They will not come on in park or with the parking brake depressed.

  4. My 2002 Silverado has two “scorched” DRL sockets and the bulbs are “scorched” as well but their filaments “look” ok – I replaced the 4157K bulbs with 4157LL (long life) bulbs but that did not fix the problem. I suspect, per your slide-show, that the sockets are burnt beyond service. Looked at the 4184 socket issue but find only a 4184 harness and information seems to say that replacing only the socket is likely to invite future trouble yet it seems that you “spliced in” the 4184 socket and replaced the bulbs and that worked. 4184 socket harness is $30 each and I find no 4184 sockets as such. Help, please. Thanks, Ed Novak.
