This 2003 Toyota 4Runner came in with the complaint that the a/c stops cooling after a while and the a/c lights on the dash start flashing. This is a common problem on later model Toyota’s in general. Most of the time it is just a failed compressor clutch relay but sometimes as in this case there is an updated part to correct the condition according to Toyota.
The MG CLT relay (magnetic clutch) is the white one in the center of the following picture.
The new relay I installed is black in color and it is and aftermarket design. I have used quite a few of these and have had no problems as of this post. There is a big difference in the cost of the original Toyota part and the aftermarket version.
The fuse box cover is marked MG CLT for the magnetic clutch relay. A quick test drive to confirm the problem was resolved and this one was done.
I would start by confirming the proper refrigerant charge level.
My problems began with only my passenger side vents blowing cold while my driver vents blew ambient i have 2006 4runner.
Wife texted me saying 2003 4Runner A/C just went out. I thought great, now it’s time to trade the 10+ year old 4Runner for a new 50k vehicle. Then I found Sparky online. I checked with wife to see if A/C light was flashing and it was. 2 hours later after finding the part at NAPA for 16 bucks, I switched it out and bingo the A/C is now working. Thanks Sparky!!!!! Of course I reminded my wife that these types of A/C repairs don’t come cheap ;}
Sweet advice! I paid $9.75 for a new (non Toyota) part and was back in business in less than 5 minutes. Sparky for President!! We need someone that knows how to fix things quick and cheap.
Same here! I have a 2003 4runner, replaced blower relay but didn’t realize the MC Relay was next to it. omeone told me that the MAgnetic Clutch would have to be replaced. I didnt believe it since the AC would work then just stop. I replaced the relay with my fog light relay until I can get a new one. The fog light relay and the 3 next to it are the same.
