2003 Chevrolet Silverado, Replacing a DRL Socket

The previous post on replacing the daytime running light sockets on a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado has detail about how to get to the socket but did not have much about how to splice in the new socket. The upper set of contacts in the picture below are burnt and are the reason for the socket replacement. Double click on the picture for a better view.

Unwrap the tape at the end of the split loom.

Open the seam on the split loom and pull the wires out. Cut and splice one wire at a time. Although the replacement wires are all white, order is important.

Stagger the splice joints.

Use a heat source and shrink the tubing in place.

Pull the split loom back over the wiring and finish with tape. To order this socket please click here.

  1. Unless there is damage from an accident or something there is no reason to dig deep into the harness to splice in the new socket. Just hold the new socket even with the old, then cut and splice each wire one at a time. Stagger the splice joints by about and inch and a half so the harness will keep an even size. That way the loom will go back over it.

  2. Hi Sparky,

First I would like to tell you what an outstanding site you run here. I have used information from here several times in the past and found both the information, and the photos to be of major help.
I do also want to ask a question about the wiring of this socket. I have the right side out in my 2004 silverado 1500. I have the replacement socket, which is a set length and stripped at the end. It appears the length is set to run all the way to the junction spot for the whole front right light assembly. In these photos, the splice in is much higher up. I wonder if where you are splicing in the line is more determined by testing the wire at the junction? Or do these sockets just get burnt enough that it is okay to splice it in as shown in your photos, and not worry about getting into that junction of wires ?(which I would prefer not to do).
    Thanks a lot.

  3. There are slight differences in different year models. So could you let me know the year make and model of your vehicle? Have yo checked for power in gear with the key on and the parking brake released? Those are the conditions needed for most drl’s to function. Some also have an override function of depressing the dome light override button three time quickly.
