2004 Pontiac Grand Prix, No Blower

This 2004 Pontiac Grand Prix came in with a complaint that the blower had stopped working and the customer saw smoke from under the passenger side of the dash. Inspection at the under hood fuse box found a blown 30 amp fuse.

I replaced the fuse.

The new fuse is the square pink fuse second from the left.

I checked and found the blower would work but made a terrible noise and would not turn off.

Time to change the blower motor and blower motor speed controller. I started by removing the passenger side lower hush panel by removing several push pin retainers.

I removed the courtesy light from the panel.

< Then I could access the motor assembly for removal. Three screws and a harness connector and it was out of there. The blower motor speed controller was put on at the factory by melting retaining bosses to hold the assembly together.

I had to use a screwdriver and pry the unit from the housing and installed the new one with screws to hold it in place.

I also checked and replaced the dirty cabin air filter which is probably what helped cause this problem. Click here to see that post.

  1. The control assembly is certainly a possibility but I would recommend checking power and ground circuits into the control assembly, as well as the integrity of the small purple/white wire between the blower speed controller and the a/c control panel.

  2. I have a 04 grand prix gt. The blower started going off and on then down to nothing or a small breath coming out of vents. The blower was replaced last year and had a warranty so I exchanged it. Still the small breath out of vents ( no matter what speed setting its on) so I replaced the resistor and still nothing (not even a breath). I thought I might have gotten a faulty one so I exchanged it for another. Still nada. Put the old resistor back in and the breath of air returned…? I checked the voltage going into the signal wire to the resistor and turned the fan speed. From low to high on the speed selector the voltage was .08 to .10 of a volt. Then I reconnected it and checked the voltage running from resistor to motor. A constant 13.10 volts? My car has no water damage at all and the only thing I can think of is the climate control unit. Any ideas?

  3. If you have a corroded wire you should think seriously about changing the harness and the resistor. You will also want to correct the cause of the water intrusion. It is normally caused by an out of position rain deflector. There is a link near the bottom of the article that takes you to that information.

  4. I have a corroded wire coming from what I believe is the resistor. anyone have a photo of the wires? diagram? can I replace just the site harness or should I replace the whole resistor
