Saturn Vue defroster won’t work

My 2003 Saturn Vue’s defroster makes a clunking sound when applied and then continues making this sound every 20-30 seconds. ONLY ON DEFROST. Defroster works until the clunk then quits. Heat is only warm on any mode.
I assume the blend door is vacuum operated and is losing vacuum and opening up? I haven’t checked into this problem, just researching how difficult this repair will be and see if anyone has seen this problem. Any help will be much appreciated

Sounds like there is a problem with one of the mode actuators at least. Try a recalibration and see if anything changes.

Calibration Procedure at the HVAC Control Head

Use the following steps to perform the calibration update:

  1. Ignition in ON position or engine running.
  2. Simultaneously press the A/C and recirculation buttons on control head 3 times in less than 2 seconds.
  3. The Mode setting lights will flash during calibration and will quit flashing once calibration is completed.
  4. This calibration process can take up to 30 seconds.
