Not getting heater to work

I took this 2015 Chevy Sonic into a shop to get a quote on fixing it. Mechanic says everything is working except a door is not opening to allow air to blow through. He’s quoting me $1300.00 says the whole dash has to come off to fix or replace the part.
Does this sound correct ? Is this something I can do myself ? Maybe it would be possible to add an accessory electric heater ?

It is kind of hard to say without a lot more information. My guess is that one of the internal doors may be broken and that would require the dash assembly to be removed.
