HVAC Controller or Actuator

So I’ve spent months reading the commentaries and other websites, and mine is similar to others on here, but slightly different. Here’s the problem…HVAC will operate just fine on A/C and then start blowing Hot air, or vice versa with the Heat during the winter. OK, points to actuator. Went through the recalibration procedure and everything seemed to work for a week or so, until it went back to doing the same. Recalibration procedure again seemed to correct it each time, so my initial diagnosis is that the controller was bad. Ok, that’s easier to get to. My friend had a controller from a wrecked Chevy Avalanche that was working when removed it that I tried to replace it. (when on ebay looking at buying a refurbished unit, it has all the varying part numbers as covered, so assume it was interchangeable). Now the actuator blowing hot air problem (it’s warming up here in Louisiana) occurs more frequently, like within 15min. The actuator appears to be “functioning”, as it does cycle properly when the recalibration procedure is done. I know how big a deal it is to replace actuators and really not looking forward to that, but I also don’t want to arbitrarily start pulling parts without a plan. Does it sound like an actuator and I need to suck it up and replace, 2 bad controllers and replace, both, or something else? Any advice?

Most likely a bad actuator.

Dual or single zone temperature control?

Does it act up only on the driver’s side vents or both sides?

If dual do both sides act up at the same time?

Are we lucky enough that you have access to a scan tool that can read the HVAC codes and data?

Dual Zone Temperature control. Acts up on both sides at the same time. Unfortunately don’t have access to a scan tool.

I would start by gently wiggling the connector to the driver’s side temperature door actuator. If the actuator moves in relation to the wiggling you will need to take the connector apart and tighten the terminals.

If wiggling it makes no difference then I would recommend replacing that actuator first as it is the easiest to change.

Also go to the far passenger side of the dash and remove the end cover. Disconnect and reconnect those connectors several times and look for any signs of corrosion. Perform a recalibration after doing this.
