1999 silverado key security

I am installing a remote start in my 1999 silverado and one of the “simple” solutions is to leave the key in the ignition to satisfy security, but this only works once. The key must be turned off, removed and re-inserted each time for the truck to run. I have cut the large wires for the switch to go to the remote box but left the small wires to the sensors intact. The key doesn’t have to even be in the ignition to start, it is worn and i can remove it in any position. Is there a trick to make this security cycle to reset to run the car each time? What is the specific name of this key type?

Thank You

Your truck is using the Passlock system. It is a coded lock  cylinder that activates a hall effect sensor when it is turned. The key is not special except that it is cut to match the lock cylinder tumblers. There should be remote start kits that that work with this system.

If you can’t find one there are two options. Number one you can find a “tuner” shop that can remove the anti theft coding from the engine computer so that the system you have will work.  Second you can try this: start the engine and then disconnect the three wire connector at the top of the lock cylinder while the engine is running. Allow it to run for a couple of minutes. The security or theft light will most likely illuminate. Turn the ignition off and see if it will restart. If it does you can continue installing you kit and it should work just fine. There will be two problems with doing it this way. If the battery ever goes dead or is disconnected the engine will not run again until the lock cylinder wiring  is reconnected and a relearn is performed.

Also be prepared that if you want to try this the engine may not run again until you perform the relearn procedure.

Thank You. Pulling the plug worked. Now I have to fiddle with the lock/arm – unlock/disarm circuits. Is there a resource to see the wire arrangement in all the plugs in the truck? I need to see what the door plug arrangement is for lock/unlock and open door switch. Also my cruise control only turns on sometimes, i would like to check the switch if I knew what wires they were in the plug.
Thanks again,
Jeff

With the year model of your truck, information is limited but GM Service Information had the most complete a s far as plug pinouts. You can buy a 3 day subscription for $20. There are also several after market companies that have a lot of information. They all have subscription models but generally are for 30 days to a year.

Thank you for the information
